History
PluggnB is the R&B-leaning branch of plugg, a trap offshoot that took shape among Atlanta producers in the mid-2010s and spread through SoundCloud. Plugg grew out of Zaytoven's sparse, bouncy beats built around a heavy 808, and the BeatPluggz collective of MexikoDro and StoopidXool built on it with soft pads, xylophone tones and melodies modelled on retro Nintendo game music (the Paper Mario soundtrack was one inspiration), over drums with few hi-hats, muffled claps and sudden beat skips. The genre is named after the collective's "Plug!" producer tag. Playboi Carti was the first rapper to embrace the style and broke through with "Broke Boi", with Rich the Kid, Kodak Black and Lil Yachty close behind. From 2017, producers such as XanGang, Thrillboy, AltoSGP and Rob $urreal pushed pluggnb proper, laying R&B elements and calm, soothing melodies over the plugg frame, with Summrs, Autumn! and KanKan as its pioneers. The sound travelled well beyond Atlanta. Face is considered the first Russian rapper to work in plugg, starting in 2015 with tracks produced by MexikoDro himself, and Big Baby Tape's 2018 EP Hoodrich Tales was plugg from start to finish.
