History
Afropop is less a single sound than an umbrella for African popular music that sets African rhythms and melodies against Western instruments like guitar, piano and trumpet and Western studio technique. Its first template was Cuban. From the 1940s Radio Congo Belge in Léopoldville, today Kinshasa, broadcast son groups such as Septeto Habanero and Trio Matamoros. Congolese bands first covered them, singing the lyrics phonetically, then wrote their own songs in French, called the result rumba though it rested on son, and moved the guajeo patterns onto electric guitar, a road that led to soukous. The musicologist Gerhard Kubik noted that Congolese players do not hear the I-IV-V-IV chord cycle as a move from tonic through subdominant to dominant and back: to them the chords are equals. In 1974 the Fania All Stars played an 80,000-seat stadium in Kinshasa at the festival around the Ali-Foreman fight, and salsa took hold in Senegal and Mali. Fela Kuti blended Yoruba music with jazz and funk, and his 1977 album Zombie was a global breakthrough. In the mid-2010s Wizkid, Davido and Burna Boy began working with global artists, and Beyoncé, Ed Sheeran and Major Lazer have since recorded with the scene's stars.
