History

Maître Gims made his name inside the Paris rap group Sexion d'Assaut before going solo in the early 2010s, and the solo records reached a much wider audience by pulling melody to the front. The method is a blend rather than a genre: rapped verses that slide into sung choruses, heavy use of processed vocals, and rhythms drawn from Congolese and Caribbean music set under French pop songwriting. Bella made the formula obvious with a chorus built to be shouted back, and Est-ce que tu m'aimes ? took the same shape somewhere closer to a ballad. Sapés comme jamais turned the pleasure of dressing well into a hook and settled in as a fixture at French weddings and parties. Born in Kinshasa and raised in France, he has kept both of those references audible in the arrangements. Listeners recognise the dark glasses of the public image, the light nasal tone, and choruses written so that one listen is enough to sing along on the second.
