History
Burna Boy built a style he calls afro-fusion, and the label is accurate: the base is Nigerian afrobeats, but the phrasing comes from Jamaican dancehall, the horn arrangements and the political directness from Fela Kuti's afrobeat, and the low end from contemporary trap. His voice is the constant, a slurred, behind-the-beat delivery that treats the bar loosely and switches between English, pidgin and Yoruba mid-line, often within one phrase. Ye brought him an international audience largely by accident of timing, and African Giant and Twice as Tall consolidated it with bigger arrangements, live percussion and guest features spanning three continents. Last Last, built on a slowed R&B sample and one of his most direct hooks, became the song that carried him into Western pop radio. Onstage he works with a full band rather than backing tracks, which puts the Fela lineage in plain sight and scales to stadiums.
