History
P-Square were twin brothers from Nigeria who turned American R&B song structure into something that worked across the whole continent, and for most of the late 2000s and early 2010s no African pop act reached further. The records pair a soft, unhurried vocal with percussion that keeps a Nigerian pulse under a mid-tempo groove, and the hooks are short, repeated and easy to sing back even by a listener who does not speak the language. Dance was half the appeal: the pair built their reputation on tightly choreographed routines and on videos made with an ambition West African pop had rarely attempted before them. Personally leans on a four-to-the-floor kick close to house and a falsetto hook. Chop My Money is looser and more chant-driven, the kind of song that works from a car speaker. They split for several years at the height of their reach and later came back together. Much of what became the international afrobeats template was already sitting in their arrangements.
