History

D'banj built a pop persona at a time when Nigerian music had very few of them. He sang and talked over the beat in roughly equal measure, dropped a harmonica line where a solo would normally go, and worked the crowd between verses, which makes the records sound like transcripts of a performance. The early material grew out of his partnership with the producer Don Jazzy, whose arrangements were sparse by the standards of the period: a hard drum pattern, one synth hook, and room left for the voice to carry the song. 'Tongolo' and 'Fall in Love' established him at home. 'Oliver Twist' then did something almost nobody from that scene had managed, crossing into the British singles chart on its own terms and reaching number two, which made the case that a Nigerian record did not have to be remade for a foreign audience. The harmonica remains the tell, and so does the showman's habit of introducing himself inside his own song.
