History

Ed Sheeran works from an unusually small kit: an acoustic guitar, a loop pedal and a voice that slides between sung melody and fast half-rapped phrasing. That setup is the whole trick behind his live shows, where he fills stadiums alone by building a track in front of the audience, layer by layer, with no band behind him. On record the palette widens into pop, folk and a marked debt to dancehall and R&B rhythm, but the songs stay built the same way: one strong repeating figure, a plainly worded hook, and a lyric that sounds like it was addressed to a specific person. "Thinking Out Loud" and "Perfect" turned into default wedding songs, while "Shape of You" became one of the most streamed recordings in the history of the format. The English singer-songwriter tradition of small detail and unforced accent runs underneath all of it. Listeners recognise him by the percussive right hand on the guitar and that slightly hoarse, close-miked delivery.
