History

Passenger is Mike Rosenberg, who kept the name of his old band after it broke up and carried on alone with an acoustic guitar. The voice is the identifying feature: high, thin and slightly nasal, with a catch in it that makes even a steady melody sound unsettled. He spent years busking in Australia and around Europe, playing to people who had not come to hear him, and that shaped the writing, songs that state their situation in the first line and hold a chorus simple enough to land on a street corner. Let Her Go is the one that travelled, a quiet picking pattern and a chorus built on a plain reversal, and it crossed from busking pitches to radio in most of Europe in 2012 and 2013. The rest of the catalogue is less polished and more conversational, with narrative songs about work, leaving and small towns. He is recognisable by the combination of an unadorned fingerpicked guitar, a voice that sounds close to breaking, and lyrics written in plain speech.
