History

Sara Bareilles writes at the piano and it shows in the songs: chord changes that move more than pop usually allows, a left hand holding the rhythm, and a voice that sits close to speech until the chorus asks for more. Love Song was written in irritation, a reply to a label that wanted something romantic, which is why the hook reads as a refusal rather than a serenade, and it became the hit anyway. Brave, blunt and encouraging, found a second life well outside music. Gravity is the better indication of what she does when nobody is asking for a single, a slow song about being unable to leave, carried by two hands and very little else. Her theatre work is not a side project: she wrote the score and lyrics for Waitress and later played the lead role in it, and the songs there use the same tools, conversational verses and a melody that keeps climbing. The craft sits in the writing more than in the production.
