History

CeeLo Green sings like a soul revivalist and phrases like a rapper, which is the combination that made his career hard to file. He came up in Atlanta as part of a rap group in the Dungeon Family circle, where his verses already stood out for being half sung, and his solo work moved further toward classic soul without losing the rhythmic snap of that delivery. The duo record he made with a producer known for sample-based work produced Crazy, built on a clipped string loop and a vocal that climbs into falsetto without ever sounding strained, and it became one of the few genuine pop standards of its decade. Forget You is the other one, Motown horns and a handclap backbeat behind a lyric whose bowdlerised title turned into a running joke, nominated for Record and Song of the Year at the Grammys. Bright Lights Bigger City sits closer to disco. What holds all of it together is the voice, wide, slightly raw and identifiable in a bar.
