History
J Boog sings island reggae with a soulful, easygoing tenor, laid over relaxed one-drop rhythms that sit somewhere between Hawaiian reggae, roots and R&B. Born Jerry Afemata in Long Beach, California, he grew up in nearby Compton in a Samoan American family and fell for reggae as a child after hearing his sister play Bob Marley's Jamming on the piano. In high school he also listened to hip hop and to Sublime, and after graduating he worked at an oil refinery while singing in clubs at night. The turning point came on a 2005 trip to Hawaii, where he handed a mixtape to the Fijian singer Fiji, who liked what he heard and worked with him on the 2007 debut Hear Me Roar. That record reached the Billboard reggae top ten, and the next two, Backyard Boogie in 2011 and Wash House Ting in 2016, both went to number one on the reggae albums chart. Let's Do It Again and Sunshine Girl became his best-known songs. Listeners recognise him by the warmth of the voice and the unhurried, sunny swing of the grooves.
