History

Arijit Singh sings quietly, and that is the whole point. In an industry built on big playback voices, he made his name with a soft, breathy tenor that stays close to the microphone, keeps most of its work in the middle register and uses restraint where an older generation would have opened up. The training behind it is Hindustani classical, and it shows in the ornamentation: small turns and slides placed inside a line rather than showy runs laid on top of it. "Tum Hi Ho" was the song that made him unavoidable, and since then he has sung across much of the major Hindi film music of the last decade, alongside Bengali and other language work. On stage he leads a live band and often sits at a harmonium, which keeps the shows closer to a concert than to a film soundtrack played back. What listeners recognise is the tone: warm, slightly grainy, intimate enough that a love song sounds addressed to one person rather than to a cinema hall.
