History
Sonu Nigam became the default male voice of Hindi film music in the 2000s by combining a very trained instrument with unusual restraint. He came up singing Mohammed Rafi's repertoire and that training shows in the clarity of his diction and the way he shapes a long note, but he built his own career by learning when not to ornament. Kal Ho Naa Ho is the clearest example: a melody that invites decoration, sung mostly straight, with the emotion carried by breath control and timing. Suraj Hua Maddham shows the opposite skill, sustained high phrases held steady across a huge arrangement, and Abhi Mujh Mein Kahin proves he could still land a slow, interior song years later. He has recorded across many Indian languages and worked with most of the significant film composers of his era, and he tours as a stage singer rather than only a studio voice. A listener recognises the clean, slightly bright tone and the absence of strain at the top of his range.
