History
Sidhu Moose Wala wrote and sang Punjabi music that pulled village folk phrasing into the shape of hip hop. He grew up in Moosa, a village in Punjab, spent time in Canada, and carried both worlds into the records: tumbi and dhol figures over trap drums, a low unhurried voice, and lyrics he wrote himself about land, family, reputation and rivalry. So High broke him out of the regional circuit, and 295 turned into a global streaming hit, charting in countries where almost nobody speaks Punjabi. His delivery was conversational rather than showy, which made the boasting land harder, and his songs were argued over as much as they were played. He was shot dead in Punjab in 2022, and the news travelled worldwide within hours. What a listener recognises is the mix of registers: a folk melody line, an American low end, and a voice that sounds like a man talking straight at you across a table. His catalogue grew fast and kept growing after his death, and the songs are still played loudly at weddings and in cars across Punjab and the diaspora.
