History

Fireboy DML sings afrobeats like a balladeer who happens to have a dance rhythm under him, and he calls the result afro-life to mark the distance from the party records the scene is better known for. The voice is warm and slightly nasal, the melodies are long, and the songs are usually about one person rather than a room. He emerged through the Lagos label ecosystem around Olamide's YBNL, where his first albums established the formula: mid-tempo log drum and shaker patterns, spacious guitars, and a chorus that a listener can sing back after one pass. Peru is the song that crossed over, a lazy, swaggering hook that got an Ed Sheeran verse on the remix and became a hit well beyond Nigeria. Bandana pushes harder, trading the softness for a sharper street edge alongside a guest with a completely different attack. The recognisable part is the writing: a romantic lyric delivered plainly, with the rhythm section doing the persuading.
