History

Switch is the alias of English producer and engineer Dave Taylor, and his club records are the blueprint many people have in mind when they hear the words fidget house: tiny, twitching vocal fragments, pitched and chopped percussion, and basslines that squeak and stutter over a solid house pulse. Tracks such as This Is Sick and A Bit Patchy in the mid-2000s turned that restless, cut-up style into dancefloor currency, and his mix for the Fabric Live series showed how it fitted alongside house, electro and bass music. He ran the Dubsided label, which gave the sound a home. Taylor's engineering skills took him far beyond the club, though. With Diplo he co-produced M.I.A.'s Paper Planes, which earned a Grammy nomination for Record of the Year, he worked on Santigold's debut album, and he was a founding member of Major Lazer. Later credits include work with Beyoncé and Christina Aguilera. In his own tracks he is recognisable by meticulous detail: every hit and syllable seems to be edited by hand, and the groove comes from those small, jittery cuts.
