History

Riva Starr is the alias of Italian producer Stefano Miele, whose house music is known for jacking grooves, loud humour and a habit of dragging in sounds from far outside the club. Before Riva Starr he made breakbeat as Madox, and he studied Chinese, spending six months in China before moving to London in 2007. His 2010 debut album "If Life Gives You Lemons, Make Lemonade" laid out the approach: eleven tracks that jump between house, breakbeat, grime, tribal percussion and jazz, made over roughly a year with the idea that a record should keep changing its mind. The opener "I Was Drunk", made with the Get Physical duo Nôze, leans on Balkan and folk colours and a woozy vocal; Jesse Rose and the grime MC Trim also turn up on the album. Miele runs his own label, Snatch! Records, and has used it for music built on live drums as well as programmed ones. In the jackin house scene of the 2010s Riva Starr stood out for swing, sampled chatter and a party-first attitude, and those are the things a listener picks up on first.
