History

Crookers made some of the loudest, most playful club music of the late 2000s fidget era: chopped vocal snippets, squelching, distorted basslines, hip hop swing and sudden stops that turn a dancefloor into a series of jolts. The project started in Milan as a duo of Francesco Barbaglia, known as Phra, and Andrea Fratangelo, known as Bot, who worked together from 2003. Both came from the Italian hip hop scene, and that background shows in the way their tracks treat rap vocals and breaks as raw material. Their first international outing was a set of remixes for the Berlin label Man Recordings, and in 2008 the Knobbers EP helped fix their reputation among fidget and electro house DJs. The same year their remix of Kid Cudi's Day 'n' Nite crossed over to a mass audience and became the version many listeners know. The 2010 album Tons of Friends leaned on a long list of guest vocalists. In 2012 Bot left and Phra carried on under the Crookers name alone. The sound is recognisable by its cheeky, cartoonish energy and bass that seems to wobble and bark at once.
