History

Karl Hyde and Rick Smith had already spent the eighties under this name in a new wave band with almost nothing in common with the Underworld people remember. The reboot came when Darren Emerson joined around 1990 and pushed the pair toward club tempos. It settled on dubnobasswithmyheadman (1994): long tracks that develop by accumulating layers rather than dropping, Hyde half-speaking fragments picked up from overheard conversation and station announcements. "Rez" (1993) does the same thing with no voice at all. "Born Slippy .NUXX" started life on the other side of a single and became the record most people know, after Danny Boyle used it in Trainspotting in 1996. Second Toughest in the Infants (1996) and Beaucoup Fish (1999) extended the method, and Emerson left after the second of them. Hyde also worked as a designer with the Tomato collective, so the graphic side of the project was never separate from the music. Their live sets run these tracks past fifteen minutes, which is how the material was built to be heard.
