History

Shawn Mendes is a Canadian singer-songwriter born August 8, 1998, in Toronto and raised in Pickering, Ontario. He built a fanbase in 2013 by posting acoustic cover songs on Vine, quickly becoming one of the platform's most-followed musicians. Manager Andrew Gertler discovered him online and helped him sign with Island Records in 2014; his debut single "Life of the Party" made him the youngest artist to enter the top 25 of the Billboard Hot 100 with a first release, at age 15. His 2015 debut album Handwritten went straight to number one in the US and Canada, powered by the hit "Stitches." Three more albums followed - Illuminate (2016), Shawn Mendes (2018), and Wonder (2020) - all reaching number one, making him the youngest male artist to top the Billboard 200 four times. His pop-leaning sound later folded in blues and rock influences. Beyond his solo work, he scored a global hit with Camila Cabello on "Señorita" (2019). After a 2022 hiatus for his mental health, he returned in 2024 with the stripped-back album Shawn.
