History

Taylor Swift writes songs that read like diary entries with the structure of country storytelling underneath them, and that combination has survived every change of genre she has made. She started in Nashville as a teenage songwriter, then moved decisively into pop, where the writing kept its specificity while the production turned to synthesisers and programmed drums. Blank Space and Shake It Off come from that pivot, both built on a hook that arrives early and a lyric that plays with her own public image rather than ignoring it. Later she went the other way, toward muted acoustic arrangements and third-person narrative, then back to confessional pop with Anti-Hero. A dispute over ownership of her early masters led her to re-record those albums herself, a move that shifted how the industry talks about artist ownership. She is the only artist to have won the Grammy for Album of the Year four times, in 2010, 2016, 2021 and 2024.
