History

His mother put videos of him singing on YouTube from Stratford, Ontario, which is how the manager Scooter Braun found him; Usher signed him, and My World came out in 2009, when he was fifteen. The record worth studying is Purpose (2015). The Jack Ü single "Where Are Ü Now" won a Grammy, and on the album Bieber, Skrillex and Diplo moved the voice into a light breathy upper register and set it over tropical-house drops where a sung chorus would normally go. "Sorry", "What Do You Mean?" and "Love Yourself" all come from it, the last co-written with Ed Sheeran and stripped back to a guitar and a trumpet line. What mainstream pop took from Purpose was a new hook shape: instead of a melody, a chopped and pitched-up vocal sample over a dance drop. Radio ran on that structure for several years afterwards.
