History
Sampha Sisay was born on 16 November 1988 in Morden, South London, to Sierra Leonean parents. He learned piano at home and began producing music as a teenager after his older brother built a home studio. A 2009 remix of The xx's "Basic Space" brought him to Young Turks, the label that became his home, and led to early collaborations with SBTRKT and Jessie Ware. After two EPs, Sundanza (2010) and Dual (2013), his debut album Process arrived in 2017, ten years into his career, written while he cared for his mother through her illness and grieved her death. Process won the Mercury Prize that year, beating Ed Sheeran and Stormzy. His sound blends R&B, electronic and pop with a raw, cracked vocal style. He has since worked with Drake, Frank Ocean, Beyoncé, Solange and Kendrick Lamar, contributing to the Grammy-winning Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers. His second album, Lahai, followed in 2023.
