History
Arlo Parks, born Anaïs Oluwatoyin Estelle Marinho on 9 August 2000 in West London, is a British singer-songwriter and poet of Nigerian, Chadian and French descent. She began posting demos to BBC Music Introducing in 2018, released the single "Cola" that November, and signed to Transgressive Records after the four-track EP "Super Sad Generation" (2019). Her sound blends bedroom pop, indie soul, R&B and folk, built around confessional lyrics about adolescence, mental health and identity; she cites Sylvia Plath, Radiohead and Joni Mitchell as influences. Her 2020 single "Black Dog," about supporting a friend through depression, brought wider attention and a link to the mental-health charity CALM. Her debut album, "Collapsed in Sunbeams" (2021), reached number three in the UK and won the 2021 Mercury Prize, beating nominees including Wolf Alice and Ghetts; it also earned a Grammy nomination for Best Alternative Music Album. Her second album, "My Soft Machine," followed in 2023, exploring touring anxiety and her first serious relationship.
