History
Frank Ocean, born Christopher Edwin Breaux on October 28, 1987, in Long Beach, California, grew up mostly in New Orleans, steeped in jazz and his mother's R&B and pop records. Before releasing his own music, he ghostwrote songs for artists including Justin Bieber, Beyoncé, and Brandy, and joined Tyler, the Creator's Odd Future collective around 2010. His 2011 mixtape Nostalgia, Ultra broke him out as a solo artist and led to a Def Jam deal. His 2012 debut album Channel Orange earned universal critical acclaim and six Grammy nominations; just before its release, Ocean published a Tumblr post describing a same-sex relationship, a rare and widely praised moment of openness in hip-hop and R&B at the time. After a four-year hiatus, he released the visual album Endless and, one day later, his independently issued second album Blonde (2016), which topped the US and UK charts. Ocean deliberately withheld Blonde from Grammy consideration, criticizing the awards' treatment of artists like him. Both albums later appeared on Rolling Stone's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time, and he is widely credited as a pioneer of alternative R&B.
