History
Blood Orange is the solo project of Devonté Hynes, an English singer, songwriter and producer born in Ilford, East London in 1985. Before this alias he played guitar in the dance-punk band Test Icicles and released two albums as Lightspeed Champion. After relocating to New York City around 2011, he debuted as Blood Orange with Coastal Grooves, then broke through with 2013's Cupid Deluxe, ranked among Pitchfork's best albums of the 2010s. Freetown Sound (2016) and Negro Swan (2018) followed, exploring race, queerness and identity through hazy R&B, funk and 80s-tinged pop, with guests including Debbie Harry, Nelly Furtado, A$AP Rocky and Tyler, The Creator; a fifth album, Essex Honey, arrived in 2025. Beyond his own records, Hynes is a prolific behind-the-scenes writer and producer, penning songs for Solange, FKA Twigs, Florence Welch and Carly Rae Jepsen, and has collaborated with Philip Glass, The Chemical Brothers and Kylie Minogue, making him one of the more quietly influential songwriters of the 2010s.
