History
Jhené Aiko Efuru Chilombo was born March 16, 1988, in Los Angeles, California. She began her career at age 14 as a backing vocalist and video performer for R&B group B2K, signing to their label The Ultimate Group in 2002; a planned debut album was shelved when she chose to finish her education instead. Aiko relaunched in March 2011 with the free mixtape Sailing Soul(s), then signed to producer No I.D.'s ARTium Recordings, an imprint of Def Jam. Her guest verse on Big Sean's 2013 hit "Beware" (with Lil Wayne) gave her a first Billboard Hot 100 top-40 entry, and her debut EP Sail Out followed the same year, spawning "The Worst," later certified quintuple platinum by the RIAA. Her studio albums Souled Out (2014), Trip (2017), and Chilombo (2020) built a reputation for airy, introspective R&B and neo soul; Chilombo peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 and earned three Grammy nominations, including Album of the Year. She has also recorded as part of the duos Cocaine 80s and Twenty88 (with Big Sean). Her older sister, Mila J, is also an R&B singer.
