History
Daniel Caesar, born Ashton Dumar Norwill Simmonds on April 5, 1995, in Scarborough, Toronto, and raised in Oshawa, Ontario, is a Canadian R&B and neo-soul singer-songwriter. Raised in a devout Seventh-day Adventist household with a gospel-singer father, he began performing in church as a child. At 17 he was thrown out of the house after a fight with his father and spent time homeless before pursuing music full-time, releasing the independent EPs Praise Break (2014) and Pilgrim's Paradise (2015). His 2017 debut album Freudian earned three Grammy nominations and won Best R&B Performance for "Best Part," a duet with H.E.R. Follow-up albums Case Study 01 (2019), Never Enough (2023), and Son of Spergy (2025) built on that success; the last became his first top-ten entry on the Billboard 200. In 2021 he featured on Justin Bieber's "Peaches," his first US number-one single. He has since collaborated with Brandy, Kali Uchis, Ty Dolla Sign, and Bon Iver, and has won four Juno Awards.
