History
James Blake Litherland was born on 26 September 1988 in Enfield, London, the son of musician James Litherland. Classically trained on piano as a child, he studied popular music at Goldsmiths, University of London, where he also ran DJ nights alongside dubstep artists Skream and Benga. He emerged in 2010 with three EPs (The Bells Sketch, CMYK, Klavierwerke) and a haunting cover of Feist's "Limit to Your Love," pioneering a minimal, bass-heavy, soul-inflected sound often labeled post-dubstep or UK bass. His self-titled 2011 debut album reached the UK top ten; his second, Overgrown (2013), won the Mercury Prize. Later albums include The Colour in Anything (2016), Assume Form (2019), Friends That Break Your Heart (2021), Playing Robots Into Heaven (2023), and a collaborative record with rapper Lil Yachty, Bad Cameo (2024). He has won two Grammy Awards and a Latin Grammy, and has written or produced for Beyoncé, Jay-Z, Kendrick Lamar, Frank Ocean and Travis Scott. His 2018 single "King's Dead," with Jay Rock, Kendrick Lamar and Future, reached the Billboard Hot 100 top 25.
