History
Solange Knowles was born on June 24, 1986, in Houston, Texas, the younger sister of Beyoncé. She began performing as a child, briefly filled in as a Destiny's Child backup dancer and singer, and released her debut album, Solo Star, at just 16 in 2002. Her sound shifted with 2008's Motown-inspired Sol-Angel and the Hadley St. Dreams, which reached number nine on the Billboard 200, and the 1980s-flavored EP True (2012), issued on her own Saint Records imprint. Solange's creative and commercial breakthrough came with A Seat at the Table (2016), a meditation on Black identity and history that became her first US number-one album; its lead single "Cranes in the Sky" won the Grammy for Best R&B Performance. The follow-up, When I Get Home (2019), continued her genre-blurring, experimental R&B and reached the top ten. Beyond music, she has staged performance-art pieces at the Guggenheim and the Venice Art Biennale, and in 2022 became the first African American to compose a score for the New York City Ballet.
