History

David Brown grew up in New Orleans in a household where secular music was not allowed, and the country first saw him on an American Idol audition in the mid-2000s, under his given name. Years of writing songs for other artists followed before anything came out under the name Lucky Daye. Two EPs, I and II, appeared in 2018 and were gathered into the debut album Painted in 2019, almost all of it produced by Dernst Emile II, who works as D'Mile. The record drew four Grammy nominations. The two kept going with the duets EP Table for Two in 2021 and Candydrip in 2022, and Algorithm followed in 2024. The construction is deliberately old fashioned: live drums, bass and guitar tracked together, strings and horns written out instead of sampled. On top of that sits a thin falsetto that frays into a rasp when he pushes it, which is the thing that keeps these records from sounding like a museum piece.
