History
Stephen Bruner comes from a Los Angeles musical family. His father drummed for the Temptations; his brother Ronald Bruner Jr. plays on many of his records. As a teenager he joined Suicidal Tendencies on bass and stayed with the band for years, taking session work at the same time, including with Erykah Badu. His solo albums all come through Flying Lotus's Brainfeeder label: The Golden Age of Apocalypse in 2011, Apocalypse in 2013, Drunk in 2017, and It Is What It Is in 2020, which won a Grammy. He also played bass across Kendrick Lamar's To Pimp a Butterfly in 2015 and shares a Grammy for "These Walls". The instrument is a six-string bass and he treats it as a lead voice: fast runs high on the neck, chords, jazz harmony dragged into pop songs. Over it he sings in a soft, unforced falsetto. The jokes in the lyrics are written, not accidental, and they sit next to some very direct writing about grief.
