History
UMI, born Tierra Umi Wilson on February 9, 1999, in Seattle, Washington, is an American singer-songwriter blending R&B, neo-soul, and alternative pop. Raised by an African-American father and a Japanese mother who taught her to read, write, and speak Japanese, she began writing songs as a child and later found her sound in high school, writing to YouTube beats and posting covers to SoundCloud until a copyright strike pushed her toward original material. She dropped out of the University of Southern California in 2019 to pursue music full-time. Her 2018 single "Remember Me" first drew wide attention, followed by a run of EPs (Balance, Love Language, Introspection) and her 2022 debut album Forest in the City. She has toured with Conan Gray and Jhené Aiko. In December 2023, she released "wherever u r" with BTS's V, a track that topped multiple charts. After leaving RCA to go independent in 2023, she signed to Epic Records and released her second album, People Stories, in August 2025.
