History
Rustie is the alias of Russell Whyte, an electronic producer born in Glasgow, Scotland, in 1983. He emerged in the late 2000s with EPs on Stuff Records and Wireblock, remixing Modeselektor, Pivot, and Zomby before signing to Warp Records in 2009. His sound, honed at Glasgow's Numbers and LuckyMe nights, fuses hyphy hip-hop and trance euphoria with speaker-mangling bass and flashes of techno, tagged variously as future bass, UK bass, and post-dubstep. His 2011 debut album Glass Swords won The Guardian's First Album Award and was called by Rolling Stone one of the most thrilling electronic albums of the decade. Its track "After Light" soundtracked a 2012 Adidas ad featuring Jessica Ennis ahead of the London Olympics. He produced three tracks on Danny Brown's 2013 album Old, then released the more restrained Green Language (2014), featuring Danny Brown and D Double E, followed by Evenifudontbelieve (2015). Active 2007-2015 and again from 2024, he remains a defining figure of the maximalist Glasgow bass sound of that era.
