History
µ-Ziq is the recording name of English musician Michael Paradinas, born 26 September 1971 in Wimbledon, London. After years playing keyboards in bands, he began making electronic music in the early 1990s on a friend's Atari ST sequencer; Aphex Twin (Richard D. James) heard the results and released his debut, Tango n' Vectif, on Rephlex Records in 1993. µ-Ziq became a key figure in the intelligent dance music (IDM) scene, and his 1997 album Lunatic Harness, blending breakbeats with dense melody, helped define the drill 'n' bass subgenre and sold over 100,000 copies, his best-selling release. In 1995 he founded the label Planet Mu, later home to genres like footwork and juke. He toured with Björk in 1997, an experience that shaped his 1999 album Royal Astronomy. Paradinas has recorded prolifically under aliases including Kid Spatula, Jake Slazenger and Tusken Raiders, and collaborated with Aphex Twin as Mike & Rich and with Speedy J as Slag Boom Van Loon. He remains active, releasing albums into the 2020s.
