History
Plaid are an English electronic music duo, Andy Turner and Ed Handley, active since 1991 and based in London. Before settling on the Plaid name they were founding members of pioneering techno act The Black Dog, and each also recorded solo under aliases (Turner as Atypic, Handley as Balil). Their sound crosses IDM, techno, electronica and ambient, built on syncopated beats, unusual time signatures and a mix of real instruments and samples, often labelled "post-techno." Signed mainly to Warp Records, they released albums including Not for Threes, Rest Proof Clockwork, Spokes, Scintilli and Reachy Prints, and collaborated with Björk, Goldfrapp and singer Mara Carlyle. A standout credit: in 2006 Plaid composed the original score for Michael Arias' acclaimed anime film Tekkonkinkreet, later scoring his follow-up feature Heaven's Door too. They also produced music for the LittleBigPlanet video game series and built a 5.1 audiovisual project, Greedy Baby, with visual artist Bob Jaroc, first screened at London's BFI IMAX in 2005.
