History
Squarepusher is the recording name of Thomas Russell Jenkinson (born 17 January 1975 in Chelmsford, Essex, England), an English electronic musician, bassist, and producer active since the early 1990s. After early self-released EPs in 1995, he met Aphex Twin (Richard D. James), who selected tracks for his 1996 debut album Feed Me Weird Things on Rephlex Records. He then signed a five-album deal with Warp Records in December 1995, releasing Hard Normal Daddy (1997), Go Plastic (2001), and later Be Up a Hello (2020) and Dostrotime (2024), among others. His sound fuses drum and bass, IDM, acid techno, and jazz fusion, often built around virtuosic live bass playing and dense breakbeat programming; he also tours with a live band under the name Shobaleader One. His younger brother, Andy Jenkinson, records as Ceephax Acid Crew. Among his more unusual credits: in 2014 he composed music performed by Z-Machines, a trio of Japanese-built robots designed to play beyond human ability, released as the EP Music for Robots. In 2024 he teased the album Dostrotime by sending fans a WAV file whose waveform, plotted on an oscilloscope, spelled out the album's title.
