History
Venetian Snares is the recording name of Aaron Funk, an electronic musician born January 11, 1975, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. Active since the early 1990s, he became one of the key figures in breakcore, known for meticulously chopped, rapid-fire drum programming built around odd time signatures, especially 7/4. He picked the name after a track whose fast snare rolls reminded him of a pencil dragged down venetian blinds. Signed to Mike Paradinas's Planet Mu label in 2001, Funk released albums at a prolific pace through the 2000s, also recording as Last Step, Snares Man!, and Speed Dealer Moms. His 2005 album Rossz Csillag Alatt Született, which fused breakbeats with orchestral samples inspired by a trip to Hungary, drew wide critical acclaim and remains his best-known work. Later collaborations include a 2010 EP with Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist John Frusciante and a 2018 full-length with producer Daniel Lanois. In 2025 he contributed drum programming to "Reliquia," a track on Rosalía's album Lux.
