History
Floating Points is the recording name of Sam Shepherd, an English producer, DJ and multi-instrumentalist born in 1986 and raised in Manchester. He trained as a pianist at Chetham's School of Music and, in parallel with his music career, earned a PhD in neuroscience from University College London, researching the biology of pain, before turning to music full-time. In 2009 he co-founded the label Eglo Records with Alexander Nut, and his 2011 EP Shadows led to a run of acclaimed albums: Elaenia (2015), Reflections - Mojave Desert (2017) and Crush (2019), which fuse jazz, classical composition and dance-floor electronics, often played live with his own ensemble. His most notable work is Promises (2021), a suite made with jazz saxophonist Pharoah Sanders and the London Symphony Orchestra, after Sanders heard Elaenia playing in a car and sought Shepherd out; it became Sanders' only studio album in his final decade before his 2022 death.
