History
Pantha du Prince is the primary alias of German producer and composer Hendrik Weber, born in 1975 in Bad Wildungen, West Germany. He launched the project in 2002 with the EP "Nowhere," and his sound moved from minimal techno and microhouse toward what he calls "sonic house," a blend of club rhythms, acoustic textures, altered field recordings, and shoegaze-inspired melody. His debut album, Diamond Daze (2004), sampled The Chills' "Pink Frost." This Bliss (2007) was later called Pantha du Prince's "high-water mark" by The New York Times. After moving from Dial Records to Rough Trade, he released Black Noise (2010), which featured guest spots from Animal Collective's Panda Bear and LCD Soundsystem's Tyler Pope and won the Echo Award's critics' prize in 2011. His most unusual project followed in 2013: Elements of Light, made with the Norwegian ensemble The Bell Laboratory and built around a three-tonne carillon of 50 bronze bells. Later albums include The Triad (2016), Conference of Trees (2020), and Garden Gaia (2022).
