Smeared tape-worn house from the 2010s: muffled four-four kick, dusty clap layer, detuned chord stabs, hypnotic and menacing in feel. A name-free Suno recipe that reproduces the signature sound without tripping the artist-name filter.

History

Darren Cunningham records as Actress and runs the label Werkdiscs, which he founded in the mid-2000s and which put out early work by Zomby, Lukid and Dean Blunt. He grew up in Wolverhampton, and the music he makes keeps house and techno structures while stripping the polish off them: drums arrive muffled, chords sound tape-worn and slightly off-pitch, and the mix behaves as if it has been copied one generation too many. Hazyville came in 2008, Splazsh in 2010 and R.I.P. on Honest Jon's in 2012, the three records that put this smeared aesthetic in front of a wider audience and gave the UK's post-techno decade a texture to work with. Ghettoville followed in 2014, announced at the time as the end of the Actress name, and AZD arrived on Ninja Tune in 2017 anyway. He has also written for the London Contemporary Orchestra, which suits a producer whose tracks were always more about mass and decay than about the drop.
