History
Hudson Mohawke is the stage name of Ross Matthew Birchard, a Scottish producer, composer, and DJ born 11 February 1986 in Glasgow. A teenage turntablist who was the youngest UK finalist at the DMC DJ Championships at 15, he co-founded the LuckyMe collective before signing to Warp Records in 2009, releasing his debut album Butter that year. His sound blends glitchy hip-hop, space-age R&B, bass music, and rave euphoria, later called "genre-smashing" by critics; DJ Pete Tong compared his impact on hip-hop to what Aphex Twin did for techno. In 2012 he formed the duo TNGHT with Canadian producer Lunice, whose trap-leaning EP became a genre touchstone, and the same year he signed to Kanye West's G.O.O.D. Music, producing on Cruel Summer and Yeezus (including "Blood on the Leaves"). Further albums Lantern (2015) and Cry Sugar (2022) followed on Warp. Trivia: his 2011 track "Cbat" unexpectedly went viral as an internet meme in 2022, eleven years after release.
