History
Primus formed in 1984 in El Sobrante, California, built around bassist and vocalist Les Claypool, whose percussive slap-bass technique became the band's signature sound. After early lineups with guitarist Todd Huth and drummer Jay Lane, the "classic" trio solidified in 1989 with guitarist Larry "Ler" LaLonde and drummer Tim "Herb" Alexander. Primus plays a genre-blurring mix of alternative and funk metal, progressive and experimental rock, built on odd time signatures and absurdist lyrics. Their self-released 1989 live debut Suck on This led to 1990's Frizzle Fry, then the major-label breakthrough Sailing the Seas of Cheese (1991), which went platinum on the strength of "Jerry Was a Race Car Driver" and "Tommy the Cat." Pork Soda (1993) and Tales from the Punchbowl (1995) both cracked the Billboard 200 top ten; the latter's single "Wynona's Big Brown Beaver" earned a Grammy nomination. Primus also wrote the theme song for South Park. When drummer Tim Alexander left in 2010, the band auditioned roughly 6,200 drummers for his replacement, documenting the search in the web series Primus Interstellar Drum Derby.
