History
Fishbone formed in Los Angeles in 1979, when bandmates John Norwood Fisher, his brother Philip "Fish" Fisher, Angelo Moore, Kendall Jones, Christopher Dowd, and Walter Kibby II met as junior high schoolers bused in from South Central to the San Fernando Valley. Their sound fused ska, funk, punk, metal, and soul into a frantic, horn-driven style that made them fixtures of L.A.'s club scene alongside friends Red Hot Chili Peppers and Thelonious Monster. Signed to Columbia Records, they released a self-titled EP in 1985 and the debut album In Your Face in 1986, followed by 1988's politically charged Truth and Soul. They toured with the Beastie Boys and Red Hot Chili Peppers and played Lollapalooza, though mainstream success eluded them despite a devoted cult following. One notable trivia point: their genre-blending style is widely cited as a direct influence on the funk-rock and ska-punk bands that followed in the 1990s. The band's story was later chronicled in the 2010 documentary Everyday Sunshine.
