Angular post-punk funk from the 1970s: scraped trebly guitar, sustained feedback squeal, melodic disco bassline, defiant and raw in feel. A name-free Suno recipe that reproduces the signature sound without tripping the artist-name filter.

History

Four students in Leeds put Gang of Four together in 1976: Jon King on vocals, Andy Gill on guitar, Dave Allen on bass and Hugo Burnham on drums. The Damaged Goods EP came out on Fast Product in 1978 and the debut album Entertainment! on EMI in 1979. What made it carry was the division of labour. Allen and Burnham played a disco-funk bottom end that held steady, while Gill left the guitar out of most of the bar and cut back in with scraped, treble-heavy stabs, so the song moves by absence as much as by playing. Solid Gold followed in 1981; Allen left after it and Sara Lee took over bass, and Songs of the Free in 1982 leaned further toward dance arrangements. Gill also produced the Red Hot Chili Peppers' 1984 debut. He died in 2020. The angular guitar over funk rhythm that runs through post-punk and its 2000s revival traces back to this band.
