History
Living Colour formed in New York City in 1984, founded by guitarist Vernon Reid, a UK-born, Brooklyn-raised musician active in the Black Rock Coalition, a collective pushing back against the idea that rock had to be a white genre. The classic lineup solidified around 1986 with singer Corey Glover, drummer Will Calhoun and bassist Muzz Skillings (later replaced by Doug Wimbish in 1992). Their sound fused hard rock and metal with funk, jazz and soul, unusual for mainstream rock at the time. The 1988 debut album Vivid, produced with help from Mick Jagger, delivered their signature hit "Cult of Personality," which won a Grammy for Best Hard Rock Performance in 1990 and later became CM Punk's WWE entrance theme. The band also won Best New Artist at the 1989 MTV Video Music Awards and a second Grammy for 1990's Time's Up, certified double platinum. They split in 1995 mid-album, each member releasing solo work, then reunited in 2000, going on to release Collideøscope (2003), The Chair in the Doorway (2009) and Shade (2017).
