History
Mother's Finest is an American funk rock band formed in 1970 by the married vocal duo Joyce "Baby Jean" Kennedy and Glenn "Doc" Murdock, who met in Chicago before settling in Atlanta, Georgia. Rounded out by bassist Jerry "Wyzard" Seay and guitarist Gary "Moses Mo" Moore, the band built a sound fusing funk, hard rock, gospel and R&B, once described as "Sly and the Family Stone meets Led Zeppelin." Their racially mixed lineup was unusual for a Southern rock act in the 1970s, and their explosive live shows famously blew headliners like Aerosmith and Ted Nugent off the stage. After a disappointing 1972 RCA debut, producer Tom Werman (Cheap Trick, Motley Crue) caught them live in Atlanta and signed them to Epic, yielding the self-titled 1976 album and 1977's Another Mother Further, home to the anthem "Piece of the Rock" and the crossover hit "Baby Love." Though mainstream success never fully arrived, the band is now credited as an originator of funk metal and a direct influence on Living Colour and Red Hot Chili Peppers.
