History
Overkill is an American thrash metal band formed in 1980 in Old Bridge Township, New Jersey. Founded by bassist D.D. Verni and drummer Rat Skates out of the ashes of a local punk band, the group was joined by vocalist Bobby "Blitz" Ellsworth and, after several lineup shuffles, guitarist Bobby Gustafson. They took their name from Motorhead's 1979 album of the same title, and their sound fused punk-driven speed and aggression with New Wave of British Heavy Metal riffing, a style critics later dubbed "the Motorhead of thrash." Early guitarist Dan Spitz left before Overkill's breakthrough and went on to join Anthrax. After a self-released EP built underground buzz, Megaforce Records signed the band, releasing the debut album Feel the Fire in 1985. Overkill became one of the first thrash acts signed to a major label when Atlantic picked them up in 1986, and their 1987 album Taking Over charted on the Billboard 200. Verni and Ellsworth remain the band's only original members and have kept it active for over four decades, with the group's total sales estimated above 16 million records worldwide.
