History
Kurupt (born Ricardo Emmanuel Brown, November 23, 1972, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) became one of the defining voices of West Coast hip-hop in the 1990s. He relocated to South Los Angeles as a teenager and joined Death Row Records in the early '90s, debuting on Dr. Dre's landmark album The Chronic (1992). With producer Daz Dillinger he formed the duo Tha Dogg Pound, appearing on Snoop Dogg's Doggystyle (1993) and 2Pac's All Eyez on Me (1996) before releasing the duo's own double-platinum debut, Dogg Food (1995), which sold roughly two million copies. Kurupt left Death Row in 1999 amid the label's post-Tupac turmoil and launched his own Antra Records, then returned to Death Row in 2002, rising to Executive Vice President. Tha Dogg Pound reunited with Snoop Dogg for the album Cali Iz Active in 2006. Accounts of his early years describe him as a formidable freestyle battler before he ever signed a record deal, a reputation that helped cement his standing on some of the era's most influential West Coast records.
