History
Spice 1, born Robert Lee Greene Jr. on July 2, 1970 in Bryan, Texas, grew up in Hayward, California, and became one of the founding voices of the San Francisco Bay Area hip-hop scene. He began recording in the late 1980s and released his self-titled debut album in 1992, followed by 187 He Wrote (1993) and AmeriKKKa's Nightmare (1994); all three were certified gold by the RIAA. His stage name is an acronym for "Sex, Pistols, Indo, Cash and Entertainment." Working primarily in West Coast gangsta rap, he signed to Jive Records and put out six studio albums plus a greatest-hits collection through the label, later teaming up with Celly Cel as Criminalz and with C-Bo and Yukmouth as Thug Lordz. He also recorded The Pioneers with MC Eiht. According to Spice 1, he stole a car as a teenager to impress Too Short, which led to his first record deal. In December 2007 he survived being shot outside his parents' home in Hayward.
